The Revolt Of Mother By Mary E. Wilkins - 1094 Words

Even in the 21st century, there is still a lingering idea that women strictly belong in the home. This can be attributed to both the continuous, though evolved, embrace of the Cult of Domesticity and natural law. In the eighteenth century the Cult of Domesticity was embraced and challenged by many women, as it is today. â€Å"The Revolt of Mother† by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman is a literary example that reinforces the idea of the Cult of Domesticity by showing the reader the boundaries between genders and the power, however limited, that a woman has. In contrast, Kate Chopin’s â€Å"The Story of An Hour†, shows the constraints that gender roles put on a woman. Chopin’s story challenges the Cult of Domesticity by using the character’s internal dialogue to show that this was not the life she pictured. The Cult of Domesticity can be tied to other themes, such as the burden of motherhood, as in â€Å"I Stand Here Ironing† by Tillie Olsen. The home a nd the children were all under control of the woman of the house, and though it sometimes feels like a burden, it is the woman’s obligation. Olsen did not fully accept nor fully condemn the Cult of Domesticity; she simply presented it as the way of life. By using the main character’s internal monologues and their actions to control, or not control, their domains, each of these authors presents their view on the Cult of Domesticity. Model Difference Analysis Supporting Process

Question: Discuss about the Model Difference Analysis for Supporting Process. Answer: Introduction: A project is a temporary endeavour that has defined timelines for its start and finish. It also has defined goals that can be measured for performance at the time of deliveries. Projects have defined budget and defined schedules(Weaver, 2010). A process is a series of activity that is performed to achieve one objective but it is focused on the management of process rather than on outcome which is the case with projects and it can be repetitive unlike projects(Soto Mnch, 2006). Building a computer on a production line is a regular operational process that would happen daily in a production unit of computers so it is not a project. Thus, this is actually a process rather than a project. Building a house has definite objectives and it would begin at one point of time and end at another definite point and thus, it can be seen as a project. Upgrading a computer from Windows 7 to Windows 10 is actually a very simple process that would take just a start and finish at one go. It does not have the complexities of deliverables and timelines. Moreover, Windows 7 to Windows 10 being an activity that does not require any expense, this activity cannot be termed as a project. Upgrading of 120 computers from Windows 7 to Windows 10 would involve specific timelines, a projected start, a project end, and specific budget for people involved in the work. It would also have specific timelines during which these machines would be updated. Thus, it can be considered as a project. References Soto, M. Mnch, J., 2006. Rock Essays - Counterculture Of The 1960s, Crossover,

Rock In this essay, I'm going to introduce to the reader a topic not touched a lot because of its complexity and its avoidance by conservative adults. This topic is, of course, Rock Music. During one week, I looked for information in the library and at my house, and from the information I gathered and my one knowledge about the topic, I'm going to lead the reader to a better understanding of Rock n' Roll. I chose to do Rock music because I can identify myself with it. Rock musicis very complex. In fact It's stylistic scope is to broad to be encompassed by any single definition (Rock Music, Groliers, p.1). Thenearest definition suggests a kind of music that represents and speaks for the teenage society. This music is characterized by using a heavy beat. In this essay, I'm going to divide Rock music into four sections: Rock of the 50?s, of the 60?s, of the 70?s and of the 80?s. Within these sections I'm also going to discuss several sub-topics such as famous composers and groups, and charac teristics of the music. The first section of this essay is Rock n' Roll of the 1950's, when Rock n' Roll was born. It emerged from rhythm and blues,a music similar to jazz played by blacks. This kind of music started to attract white teenagers. Disc jockey Alan Freed was the one who introduced this music and later gave it the name of Rock n' Roll. Record companies distributed records played by whites but composed by blacks.Whites were frustrated because there weren't any white artists and they didn't want the blacks to be the stars until Bill Haley appeared with his Rock Around the Clock. In this decade, Elvis Presley introduced amusic that was sexual suggestive and outraged dull adults. In time he changed the style of the music by adopting a country and western style andbecame a national hero. By the end of this decade and the start of the next, Rock n' Roll started to decline because it was formula ridden and it was too sentimental. Teenage audiences transferred their allegiance t o Folk music. In 1963 the renewal of Rock n' Roll came when The Beatles started to play. The Beatles, for some the best rock group ever, were from Liverpool, England. Through the 60's, The Beatles dominated the record industries and with their dominant instrumentation, which included: electric leads, rhythm, and bass guitar, drums and sometimes an electric organ, changed the name of Rock n' Roll to just Rock. During the1960's many other styles of music arose from Rock like, Motown, Soul music, Jazz-rock , Folk-rock and others. Folk-Rock the most appreciated of this derivations and was first suggested by Bob Dylan. This kind of music brought to folk music a hard beat and amplification; and to Rock, a new poetic style. California was one of the major centers of rock activity and experimentation during the decade. First it was characterize for its surfing music, a very joyful music that reflected the fun people had while surfing. The Beach Boys were the ones who introduced this kind of music. At the end of the century this happy kind of music changed to a more rebellious style that was designated the name of hippie music. Groups that played this music were Country Joe and The Mamasand The Papas. Along with this hippie ideas popularity of hallucinogenic drugs produced a psychedelic style of music called Acid Rock. By theend of the 60?s the distinctions between Rock n? Roll and Rock were evident. The early instruments- saxophone, piano, amplified guitar, and drums-had been changed to electric guitar and bass, amplified drums and other electronic devices. Not only did the instruments change but so did the ideas behind the music. For example, to the lyrics of teenage love and adolescent concerns were added social commentary, glorification ofdrugs and free-association poetry(Rock Music, Groliers, p.1). Groups like The Beach Boys, Crew Cuts and The Everly Brothers were replaced bymore imaginative, non-descriptive names groups like The Who, Jefferson Airplane, Big Brothe r and Holding Company. The Who, the most famousof these groups, were originally from England and were reknowned becauseof their bizarre stage performances, they would destroy their instruments after

Presidential Elections and Allegory of the Cave essays

Presidential Elections and Allegory of the Cave essays In Plato's "Allegory of the Cave," prisoners waste their entire lives chained in an underground cavern, nurtured into deeming that shadows' wavering in front of them is a reality. Socrates presents the allegory of the hardship of grasping reality. One prisoner manages to break off the chains to escape from the cave, only to realize that shadows he had been observing his entire life are in fact, not reality. According to Socrates, this realization is not an immediate acknowledgment by the prisoner, because he states, "He will be unable to see them [reality], at least at first" (516). Furthermore, according to Socrates people trust their senses too much and believe the world [politics] as it is to our site. As modern-day presidential (marionette) candidates are manipulated by their parties, which are manipulated by lobbyists and firms at large with billion of green fuel and imprisoned citizens are nurtured into believing campaigning propagandas are a reality. The media, social networking, various organizations are vehicles to gathering and publishing popular topics for the candidates. For instance, 2012 presidential elections' topics: drug legalizations, economy, and healthcare are topics that majority would bet money that they know all that there is to know. According to Allegory of the Cave, in reality, we only know what is in our display and what we have been exposed to our entire lives in this society. There is a wall, beyond which we cannot intervene, nor do we have the right to observe the authenticity. There is no doubt that social media influences the outcome of the elections. Especially, because many young adults tend to obtain news and information through social media, due to its easy and fast access. All politicians use the social media fountain to post and tweet their absurd observations for help on strategies that grasp young adults, for campaigning means. In Plato's Allegory of the Cave, the freed prisoner realizes ...

How to Use a Dash

How to Use a Dash The dash (- )  is a mark of punctuation  used to set off a word or phrase after an independent clause or a parenthetical remark (words, phrases, or clauses that interrupt a sentence). Dont confuse the dash (- ) with the hyphen (-): the dash is longer. As William Strunk Jr. and E.B. White explained in The Elements of Style: A  dash  is a mark of separation stronger than a  Ã¢â‚¬â€¹comma, less formal than a  colon, and more relaxed than  Ã¢â‚¬â€¹parentheses. There are actually two types of dashes, each with different uses: the  em dash- also called the long dash, according to Oxford Online Dictionaries- and the  en dash, which doesnt have another name but falls between the hyphen and em dash in terms of length.  The  en dash  is so named because it is approximately the equivalent width of the uppercase letter  N  and the  em dash  is roughly the width of an uppercase  M. Origins Merriam-Webster says the word  dash  comes from the  Middle English word  dasshen, which probably derives from the Middle French term  dachier,  meaning to impel forward. One current definition of the word  dash  is to break, which would well describe what a dash does in syntax. The  Online Etymology Dictionary  says the dash- a horizontal line used as a punctuation mark- first appeared in writing and printing in the 1550s. By the late 1800s, the dash had taken on some very specific roles. According to  Thomas MacKellar, in his 1885 book, The American Printer: A Manual of Typography : The em dash...is frequently used in particular works as a substitute for the comma or for the colon, and is found particularly serviceable in rhapsodical writing, where interrupted sentences frequently occur.   MacKellar noted several specific uses for the dash, including: A sign of repetition in catalogs of goods, where it means  ditto. In catalogs of books, where it was used instead of repeating an authors name.As a stand-in for the words  to  and  till, as in chap. xvi. 13-17. The last use would today be an  en dash, which indicates a range. The En Dash Though the Associated Press does not use the  en dash, the press service nicely describes how other styles  do  use the shorter dash.  Some other styles call for  en dashes  to indicate ranges of dates, times, or page numbers, or with some compound modifiers. For example: He worked from 9–5.  She works from 8 a.m.–5 p.m.The festival will take place March 15–31.For your homework, read pages 49–64. To create an  en dash  using a keyboard on a Windows-based system, hold down the Alt key and simultaneously type 0150. To create this punctuation mark on a  Macintosh-based system  hold down the Option  key  and press the Minus key  [-].  American Psychological Association notes that you would use the  en dash  for: Items of equal weight (test–retest, male–female, the Chicago–London flight).Page ranges (in references, â€Å"...Journal of Applied Psychology,  86, 718–729†).Other types of ranges (16–30 kHz). Angela Gibson, writing for the MLA Style Center, a writing resource for the Modern Languages Association, says the organization uses an en dash when a single compound adjective is a proper noun, as in: Pre–Industrial Revolution city. She notes that the MLA also calls for an  en dash when a compound in the predicate position includes a proper noun: The crowd was Beyoncà © Knowles–obsessed. The Em Dash The AP, which does use  em dashes, explains that these punctuation marks are  used: To signal an abrupt change. To set off a series within a phrase. Before attribution to an author or composer in some formats. After datelines. To start lists. AP style calls for a space on both sides of an  em  dash, but most other styles, including MLA and APA, omit the spaces. On a Windows-based system, you can form an  em dash  on a keyboard by holding down the Alt key and typing  Ã¢â‚¬â€¹0151. To create the em dash on a Macintosh-based system, hold down the  Shift  and  Option  keys and press the  Minus  key [-], notes  Techwalla, adding that alternatively, you can press the  Hyphen  key twice and press  Space. There are two basic ways to use an  em dash  in a sentence: After an independent clause: Author Saul Below, in My Paris, provides an example of using an  em dash  after an independent clause: Life, said Samuel Butler, is like giving a concert on the violin while learning to play the instrument- that, friends, is real wisdom. To set off words and phrases:  Writers have effectively used  em dashes  to shoehorn a parenthetical thought or remark into a sentence, as this quote illustrates: Copper Lincoln cents- pale zinc-coated steel for a year in the war- figure in my earliest impressions of money.- John Updike, A Sense of Change,  The New Yorker, April 26, 1999 Thoughts on the Dash For a tiny punctuation mark, the dash has sparked an unusual level of debate among writers, grammarians, and punctuation experts. The dash is seductive, says Ernest Gowers in The Complete Plain Words, a style, grammar, and punctuation reference guide. It tempts the writer to use it as a punctuation-maid-of-all-work that saves him the trouble of choosing the right stop. Some have expressed support for the dash: The dash is less formal than the semicolon, which makes it more attractive; it enhances conversational tone; and...it is capable of quite subtle effects. The main reason people use it, however, is that they know you cant use it wrongly.- Lynne Truss, Eats, Shoots Leaves Other writers strenuously oppose using the mark: The problem with the  dash- as you may have noticed!- is that it discourages truly efficient writing. It also- and this might be its worst sin- disrupts the flow of a sentence. Dont you find it annoying- and you can tell me if you do, I wont be hurt- when a writer inserts a thought into the midst of another one thats not yet complete?- Norene Malone, The Case- Please Hear Me Out- Against the Em Dash.  Slate, May 24, 2011 So, next time you look in your toolkit of punctuation marks and see the  en dash  or  em dash  just waiting to be put to work, ensure that you are using these marks for the right reasons and following the rules discussed. Ask yourself if your  parenthetical remark  will add nuance and insight to your writing or just confuse the reader. If its the latter, return the dashes to your punctuation tool bag and use a comma, colon, or semicolon instead, or revise the sentence so that you can omit the dreaded dash. Source Gowers, Ernest. Atkins Diet Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Atkins Diet - Research Paper Example Some of the popular diets are low carbohydrate diets, low fat diets, correct carbohydrates diet and perfect proportions and careful combinations diet. Atkins diet is one of the popular diets recommended for weight reduction. In this article, the benefits and harms of Atkins diet will be explored through review of literature and critical analysis. Atkins diet is a type of low carbohydrate diet that was first introduced by Dr.Robert. C. Atkin in 1972 and revolutionized in the 1990s (Goodwin, 2006). The diet mainly constitutes high-protein meats, poultry, eggs and full-fat dairy products. The diet banishes carbohydrate foods like rice, bread and pasta and encourages intake of high-protein, high-fat food. Atkins diet is based on the fact that consumption of carbohydrates raises the glucose levels in the blood which in turn triggers insulin secretion from the pancreas (Harvard Medical School, 2007). However, high insulin levels make the person feel hungry and this again leads to increased carbohydrate intake. Carbohydrate meal is more satisfying and people prefer to eat such meals when they are hungry. The weight gain thus continues. On the other hand, fatty diet is more satisfying and filling and people tend to eat less. Fatty diet does not make the insulin levels surge. Also, diets low in carbohydrate cause dehydration because not much water is released in the metabolism. Hence the body mobilizes carbohydrates from the stores in the liver and muscle. This results in weight loss (Harvard Medical School, 2007). There are basically four phases in the Atkins diet. They are induction, ongoing weight loss, premaintenance and maintenance phases. The duration of each of the phases depends on the extent of obesity of the person and response to the diet. Most often than not, Atkins diet is recommended in the induction phase during which time, carbohydrate intake is restricted to less than 20 grams per day. Most of the carbohydrates are to be derived from
